Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed the new University of Akron Corrosion Engineering Laboratory, as part of the Corrosion Engineering Education and Research Initiative, the first of its kind in the country.

This state of the art laboratory, dedicated to study of corrosion and its effects on common materials is designed for both teaching and research and according to LEED and Labs 21 principles. The lab was designed to promote flexibility in the work environment and to accommodate a variety of lab experiments involving material testing. This laboratory served as the prototype for the University of Akron Wolfs Ledges Laboratory Facility.

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON, AYER HALL CORROSION ENGINEERING LABORATORY

Metropolitan Architecture Studio has coordinated the renovations and additions of dozens of cottages and apartments at this Senior Living community located in Oberlin, Ohio since 2015. Cottages and apartments include studios, one bedroom, two bedroom, one bed and den, and two bed and den units. Additionally, MAS has designed and coordinated construction of numerous garages, carports, and lots to fit into the beautiful landscape of Kendal, which boasts of acres of natural landscape and a stunning arboretum.

KENDAL AT OBERLIN SENIOR HOUSING

The Cleveland Clinic’s Global Leadership and Learning Institute required a new facility to host their executive leadership seminars and house its staff for this noteworthy program that educates leaders in the healthcare industry. MAS designed the new facility within an existing 16,000 sf space at the Cleveland Clinic’s administrative campus. Composed of classrooms, offices, conference rooms, collaboration spaces, and a unique “ideation” space, the 16,000 sf facility features the latest in learning technology.

CLEVELAND CLINIC GLOBAL LEADERSHIP & LEARNING INSTITUTE

The Seidman Cancer Center at St John Medical Center is a state of the art facility to serve cancer patients for treatment and diagnosis. The project includes infusion rooms, exam rooms, treatment rooms, procedure rooms, sterile compounding pharmacy lab, lobby, offices, conference rooms, and blood laboratory. Project Size: 13,400 sf; Project Cost: 1.8 million.

ST. JOHN MEDICAL CENTER SEIDMAN CANCER CENTER

Redevelopment of the existing North Campus Residential District at The Ohio State University. Metropolitan Architecture Studio served as local architect working with nationally recognized planners Goody Clancy and Elkus Manfredi. The project will include multiple residence halls organized around green spaces, a new pedestrian main street through the center of the district, new dining halls and a new recreation facility. Metropolitan Architecture Studio conducted a Facility Suitability Index Study—a pilot project to assess the programmatic suitability of buildings in the North residential District that was used to inform the development of the master plan. Working with OSU Campus Planning, MAS developed standard scorecards and the methodology to assess twenty-two buildings in the district, including dining, recreation, housing, and commons buildings. Additionally, MAS provided model building and site documentation services.

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY NORTH RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT

Metropolitan Architecture designed a new Sterile compounding pharmacy to support the treatment of cancer patients at the new branch of the Seidman Cancer Center for University Hospitals in Sharon Center, Ohio. Integration of diagnostic, laboratory, and other high-tech equipment including bio-safety cabinets with ISO-5 and ISO-7 clean rooms. Pharmacy included negative pressure ante room, compounding area, pharmacy, and work area.

Kraftmaid Cabinetry, one of the nation’s leading makers of custom cabinets, has hired Metropolitan Architecture Studio for numerous projects at their corporate headquarters in Middlefield, Ohio, and for their new facility in Salt Lake City Utah. A new corporate executive wing and lobby was designed to help Kraftmaid establish a “design” identity for national clients and vendors. Metropolitan Architecture Studio also designed a future multi-media facility and showroom, a 25,000 square foot expansion to the current corporate offices, and various interior design and renovations for several of the cabinetmakers facilities. Various green building design techniques were employed in the corporate headquarters building, such as a unique clerestory lighting element over the primary open office space to provide abundant daylighting to interior offices.

KRAFTMAID CABINETRY

Metropolitan Architecture Studio is designing a new cottage neighborhood to complete the second phase of a townhome development completed in 2011. Single family cottage homes, approximately 1600 sf each are planned to integrate into the existing neighborhood. Multiple massing/elevations with open 2 bedroom, 2 bath plans. On a compact site, in an inner ring suburb of Cleveland, the neighborhood is designed as a walkable community, located within walking distance of neighborhood services. Front porches, intimate setbacks, and traditional forms create a community that is sympathetic with the beauty and character of the historic garden suburb of Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

NEW COTTAGE NEIGHBORHOOD, CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO

Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed the new Olson/Donovan Chair Tissue Engineering Laboratory for the Department of Bio-medical Engineering at the University of Akron.

This research laboratory is designed for tissue and DNA research. The laboratory combines chemical and biological workspace for biomedical engineers. The design provided for a fluid workflow, enabling different groups to work in the lab simultaneously. The lab accommodated fume hoods, bio-safety cabinets, rheometers, and other biomedical engineering equipment and an isolated space for microscopy. LEED and Labs 21 principles were used in its design.

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON OLSON DONOVAN TISSUE ENGINEERING LABORATORY

Located within an existing residential neighborhood on Cleveland’s west side, the new John Marshall High school is designed with a sensitivity to the existing historic Art Deco building, yet creates a fresh and inspiring look for the community. Using brick, precast stone, metal, and glass, the building’s massing, proportions, and detailing create a civic presence in scale with its surroundings. Metropolitan Architecture Studio collaborated with the CEDA (Cleveland Educational Design Alliance) team, as design lead for the exterior architecture and integration of interior and exterior. 

Size: 230,000 sf; 1400 students. Follows OSFC (Ohio School Facilities Commission) guidelines. Project cost: 25 million

JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL

Metropolitan Architecture Studio completed interior renovations for the St. Philomena Catholic Church, an historic turn of the century church originally designed with funds from John D. Rockefeller who influenced the architectural style. Renovations included design of a new floor for the sanctuary and narthex to replace a 1950’s era vinyl tile floor. Additionally, the project included renovations of existing pews, and creation of an open space for events at the rear of the sanctuary. Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed the floor pattern in the manner of historic church floors, using new materials to create a beautiful and maintainable floor.

ST. PHILOMENA CHURCH RENOVATIONS, EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO

Metropolitan Architecture Studio has designed a new walkable neighborhood in the suburban community of Olmsted Township, Ohio. An example of suburban retrofit planning, the design creates a walkable node within existing suburban development. Fifty new cottage homes are arranged around a common green space, and located within walking distance of basic neighborhood services such as a grocery, drugstore, bank, restaurants, and a walk-in healthcare clinic. The 17 acre site along also contains 35,000 sf of new commercial space. Adjacent to the site is an existing golf range, providing access to recreation and golf cart transportation for residents. The design is suitable for all age groups including young people, families with children, and older adults who desire walkability for many of their daily needs.

OLMSTED TOWNSHIP LIFECYCLE NEIGHBORHOOD

The Glidden House, located on the campus of Case Western Reserve University is a 19th Century Inn and a registered historic landmark. Metropolitan Architecture Studio is involved in interior and exterior renovations of the historic building as well as the design of the new Glidden House Pavilion and terrace which create a focal and gathering space for special events. Renovations included comprehensive window replacement, and selective interior reorganization such as new fitness center, pub, and billiard room. The building is used for administration, conferencing, and hospitality.

GLIDDEN HOUSE, HISTORIC INN-PRESERVATION/ADDITIONS

The 6000 sf facility involved the consolidation of four distinct operations within the Cleveland Clinic to improve the efﬁciency of the onboarding process for new staff and caregivers. The consolidation included the Occupational Health Clinical area for exams and testing of new employees, ofﬁces for acquisition of new talent, and the badging and parking ofﬁces for the enterprise. The clinical area included 9 new exam rooms, a mental health therapy suite, waiting and reception, and drug testing and biodex components. Talent Acquistion consisted of open ofﬁce areas, waiting, and conference area. The project was a renovation of an existng dining/cafeteria area at the Cleveland Clinic administrative campus.

CLEVELAND CLINIC OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH FACILITY

Metropolitan Architecture Studio has assisted Communion of Saints Parish and St. Ann Church with multiple historic restoration and adaptive reuse projects at their historic landmark campus in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The campus includes five buildings: church, rectory, school, gymnasium, and coach house. The oldest buildings date from 1917. Projects have included window replacement/restoration, ADA upgrades including a new elevator, new serving kitchen in the lower level of the church, school roof replacement, lighting retrofit, cafeteria renovation, gymnasium renovation, and new signage.

COMMUNION OF SAINTS PARISH HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Community Excellence Award for Best Smart Growth Multifamily Development 2008

Working with Forest City Land Group, Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed a new 54 unit condominium project in Lakewood, Ohio which anchors the Rockport Square redevelopment district. This six floor building consists of five floors of residential space as well as ground floor commercial-flex space. Large areas of glass, balconies, spacious plans and a variety of floor layouts create highly desirable units. A brick and stone exterior with ornamental metal accents create an attractive addition to the community and streetscape. Located on a major transit line, in an existing inner ring suburb, on the site of former used car lots, this project is an example of Metropolitan Architecture’s commitment to sustainable design.

ROCKPORT SQUARE LOFTS

Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed a new 8,000 sf express care clinic for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. The facility is a renovation of an existing shopping center suite and accommodates space for primary, express, and specialties care. The project is designed according to Cleveland Clinic Foundation standards. Scope of work included exam rooms, reception, nurses stations, office spaces, conference, and service areas.

CLEVELAND CLINIC OLMSTED FALLS PRIMARY/EXPRESS CARE AND SPECIALTIES CLINIC

This 33,000 sf facility incorporates a Children’s Therapy practice, a Primary Care and Express Care Clinic, a blood lab, and administrative ofﬁces. The clinical areas feature 43 exam rooms, nurse stations, waiting, reception, blood laboratory, soiled and clean rooms, ofﬁce areas, and a community room. The Children’s Therapy Suite features indoor gymnasiums for therapy swings, sensory rooms, speech, feeding, casting, and other specialized therapy rooms for children. The project was the conversion of a vacant supermarket building

CLEVELAND CLINIC STOW FAMILY HEALTH CENTER

Metropolitan Architecture Studio, in collaboration with the Cleveland Educational Design Alliance (CEDA) crafted the design for the new 125,000 sf Girard Junior and Senior High Schools, in Girard, Ohio.

This unique 7-12th grade school, accommodating 800 students, is designed as two schools with separate identities and entrances, while remaining part of a cohesive and unified building. An octagon-shaped media center/administrative center and entry creates a focal point for the building flanked by the two story high school on one side and the single story junior high school on the other side. A sweeping curved façade on the southern elevation creates a unique entrance for athletic events as well as accommodates a one of a kind signage element. The building incorporates green design strategies including geothermal heating and cooling. 

GIRARD HIGH SCHOOL

MAS designed a new technology lab for Beaumont private school in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The project was a renovation of existing classroom space within an existing 1960’s era structure. The new lab includes computer work areas, collaboration areas, lounge areas, video editing, podcasting room, and workroom.

BEAUMONT DIGITAL INNOVATION LAB

The facility includes a new cyber security suite linked to an existing global security operations center. The project included new furniture, lighting, ﬁnishes. Creation of the new collaboration space between Cleveland Clinic Global Security and Cyber Security to be used in the event of major security threats to the enterprise. The project was a renovation of an existing ofﬁce area at the Cleveland Clinic administrative campus

The new Seidman Cancer Center in Sharon Center, Ohio is designed for cancer treatment and diagnosis. Metropolitan Architecture Studio also provided planning services for a linear accelerator, and CT scan. The design process included a comparative analysis of LEED design strategies.

SHARON SEIDMAN CANCER CENTER

Redevelopment of a 15 acre site in Oberlin, Ohio within and existing urban fabric of homes, retail, and commercial uses. Metropolitan Architecture Studio worked with the NRP Group to create a master plan for a new sustainable neighborhood. Focused on empty nesters, and an Aging in Place market, our project team created a neighborhood plan with 40 to 50 cottage style residential units, common buildings, tree lined streets, and 4 to 5 acres of green space. Proximity to downtown Oberlin and Oberlin College, and access to the NorthCoast Inland Bike trail provides
for choice in transportation. bike storage and community space located at the beginning link of the trail.

OBERLIN GREEN ACRES DEVELOPMENT

Nathan Hale School is one of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s projects to provide updated schools in the Cleveland neighborhoods.

Metropolitan Architecture Studio in collaboration with the Cleveland Educational Design Alliance, developed the exterior aesthetics and details of ten schools built throughout the City of Cleveland. The school is designed to have an identifiable and memorable community presence, stretching out its facade along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The main entrance incorporates historic stone elements from the former school. Designed to accommodate approximately 450 students. 64,000 sf, $12.3 million.

NATHAN HALE K-8 SCHOOL

As an extension of the downtown commercial corridor, the plan for a new outreach campus, combined with a mixture of commercial and residential opportunities, integrates the site into the historic fabric of the city of Oberlin and Oberlin College, forming a new gateway to the south on the city of Oberlin’s main street. The plan is multimodal, within an existing walkable community and intersected by the Northcoast Inland Bike Trail. A public open space is created which highlights the historic Gasholder Building, funded for development of an interpretive Center for the Underground Railroad, and a proposed stop on the bike trail.

MAS designed the neighborhood master plan to accommodate a potential outreach campus as a collaborative effort between Lorain Community College and Oberlin College.

OBERLIN STATION SQUARE NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN

Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed a new two story addition and renovation for a historic century home in Bay Village Ohio. The project includes a new kitchen, family room, mud room, master bedroom and bathroom suite, and wrap-around porch. The house new addition is designed to connect seamlessly with the historic 19th century farmhouse.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE, BAY VILLAGE, OHIO

Metropolitan Architecture Studio provided services for the interior build-out of a new bio-instrumentation lab. Designed for the Department of Bio-Medical Engineering at the University of Akron, the lab will develop imaging instruments for cancer diagnostics, blood loss monitoring, and tissue structure analysis.

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON AUBURN LABORATORY

Metropolitan Architecture Studio, in collaboration with the Cleveland Educational Design Alliance, created this conceptual design for the Charles Mooney K-8 School, in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The design evokes an early modern aesthetic.

CHARLES MOONEY K-8 SCHOOL

Metropolitan Architecture Studio collaborated with the Cleveland Educational Design Alliance (CEDA), on the design of ten new schools built throughout the City of Cleveland.

The new 64,000 square foot Wade Park School uses contrasting brick, metal, and glass combined with classic proportions to create a fresh arts and crafts style building. The school has a civic and identifiable presence that fits into its urban neighborhood context. The school was developed according to OSFC (Ohio School Facilities Commission) guidelines. 

WADE PARK SCHOOL

Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed a new addition to a 70’s era home in Hudson, Ohio. An existing garage was converted into home business office. A new garden room and garage were added. sympathizing with the architecture of the original home. A new loggia connects the garden room and home business office to the main house, creating a new lifestyle environment for the owners.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE, HUDSON, OHIO

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is working to provide updated schools for Cleveland’s neighborhoods.

In collaboration with the Cleveland Educational Design Alliance (CEDA), Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed the new Euclid Park School, sited on a hilltop in an industrial area on the outer edges of the city. The 54,000 sf school was designed in an industrial vernacular using metal panels, masonry, and glass. The design creates a fresh and inspiring look for the community. Euclid Park accommodates 350 students. 

EUCLID PARK SCHOOL

Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed a New Tech School based on the nationally recognized New Tech collaborative learning model. This project included renovation of an existing high school wing into project rooms, laboratories, student community room, and administrative areas.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS NEW TECH SCHOOL

PM & R Outpatient Services/Functional Electrical Stimulation Center Master Plan

Programming and planning for the relocation of Outpatient PM & R Faculty Clinics, Therapy Services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and vocational services, PM & R Support Services, and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center into existing space at Metro Health Medical Center’s Old Brooklyn Campus. Project size: 70,000 sf

METROHEALTH REHABILITATION INSTITUTE

Design of a 3000 square foot custom home built on the shores of Lake Erie, east of Sandusky, Ohio. This unique house features regional materials, an open plan layout, custom ash millwork, and cedar shingles. The black cedar siding was designed to recall the great ships on Lake Erie. Kathleen Tark served on the design team for this project with Paul Westlake, architect.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE, HURON, OHIO

ARTEMUS WARD SCHOOL

Metropolitan Architecture Studio in association with Richard L. Bowen and Associates, designed the new 23,000 square foot City of Cleveland Kennel Facility.

Designed according to state of the art treatment for animals, the facility will house 150 dogs, 100 cats, a veterinary facility and clinic for spading and neutering, administrative and lobby area, volunteer services area, garage, and adoptive area for the public. MAS was responsible for programming, schematic design and planning, and interior design. This highly successful project, with innovative planning ideas will set the standard for kennel facilities nationwide. The building is designed to face the surrounding neighborhood park and playfields, and integrates a neighborhood dog park and Towpath Trail into the site. 

CITY OF CLEVELAND NEW KENNEL FACILITY AND VETERINARY CLINIC

Community Excellence Award for Best Smart Growth Development and Cleveland Choice Award for the Best Smart Growth Development/Land Plan

Lakewood, Ohio, a dense inner ring suburb of Cleveland, was seeking to redevelop an area along their central main street, Detroit Avenue with new residential opportunities to retain residents. Originally a streetcar suburb, and more recently occupied by used car lots, this neighborhood is on a major transit line into downtown Cleveland. Working with Forest City Land Group, Metropolitan Architecture Studio designed the Rockport Square Neighborhood Plan which centers on a new urban tree-lined square. Two new six story residential loft buildings face the open space which creates a special green space along the narrow corridor of Detroit Avenue. Live/ Work units occupy the ground level of the loft buildings. New retail and a renovated historic building occupy the east side of the square, and a historic fire house becomes a meeting place for the neighborhood.

ROCKPORT SQUARE NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN

MAS performed the coordination and planning for an enterprise wide kiosk project,  throughout the Cleveland Clinic facilities in Northeast Ohio.   Locations included Main campus, Eastern Campus, Southern campus and Western campus buildings.

CLEVELAND CLINIC ENTERPRISE WIDE KIOSK PROJECT

Interior renovation of existing 12,800 sf facility housing physical therapy and orthopedics and configured around a two story central atrium lobby. Physical therapy program included treatment rooms, therapy gym, waiting, reception, staff work, equipment rooms.  Orthopedics program consisted of MRI suite, radiology suite, waiting, reception, check in, exam rooms, work room, cast room, and staff work areas. 

METROPOLITAN ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

Work
